LightSail & Schweizer

We’re thrilled to show-off one of the latest embroidered patches we helped our friends at The Planetary Society create. Not only because this is such a beautiful patch but also because of the mission behind it. Space is such an extraordinary and unknown place that when we learned that we were going to help out, we were ecstatic and intrigued!

The patch itself is made up of 9 different colors of thread, all embroidered on a twill background. It has a plastic backing so that it can be sewn onto a garment or displayed somewhere without having to worry about the edges curling due to heat or humidity. With such details in the stars, sun, earth and sail, our employees took great time and effort making sure that everything looked as close to perfection as possible.

Now, onto the most interesting part of this post (we understand that patches don’t excite everyone as much as they do us ;)), LightSail. The LightSail spacecraft is a mini satellite that contains 32 square meters of shiny Mylar. Once the satellite is released in space, the Mylar deploys and uses photons from the sun to solar sail. LightSail has the capability to go to the moon, planets and beyond and will further help with the exploration of the vast unknown.

LightSail is completely citizen funded through a Kickstarter project: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/theplanetarysociety/lightsail-a-revolutionary-solar-sailing-spacecraft and has already launched their prototype in May. Their primary mission will take place in 2016 and fly on the Falcon Heavy.

And per usual please let us know at Schweizer if you have any patch, pin, lanyard needs because we are here to help YOU!

*A special thanks to the Planetary Society for your trust in us with this truly unique and exciting project!
